I think the problem is with the encoder heads. It is my understanding that
each model of the heads only work with a specific range of lines per inch.
Both US Digital and HP have chart listing what is acceptable for a specific
model. If memory serves me correctly you can deviate from the recommended
lpi by 20%. So, if you take an encoder that is usable on a 2048 slot 2" disk
(this is the highest resolution that I think is available) and calculate out
the lines per linear inch on the disk you will end up very close to the 360
lpi that the linear strip is offered in.
