power supply??
A variac does not isolate from the mains. With a power supply built as
you describe a person could easily get electrocuted. Whenever using a
variac this way you need to have an isolation transformer in the
circuit. Normally the variac plugs into it. Search the list archived for
lots of discussion on the why for this.
