Chris,
The question you have to ask yourself is this: "Is my hobby making
parts or building machine tools?" If your hobby is building machine
tools, then go for it. I can think of several problems you will
encounter but, running out of range is the first one I can invision.
On my knee mill with an 8" rotary table I frequently have clamping
problems as well.
One thing for sure, it will be a gas to watch it run!
For an economical approach, I suggest you purchase a used Bridgeport
and convert it. At the end of the day you will have saved a lot of
time and a lot of money and have a machine with power and capacity.
Just think of the crashes you will witness when you are trying to
debug your software. This aint no pen-plotter you are suggesting.
