Like a record player...
There's a really great website of this type of machine on the net. I
listed the url here a couple of years ago. (Sorry, but I don't have
it now, it's in the archive<G>)
BTW, it DID have software...

P.S. One gotcha with this type of machine is the speed of rotation
necessary for decent "linear speeds", and the variability of "step
size" as you move out the radius of the rotary...
