There was an article in last months machine design mag that sounded
something like

they used a "tilted array" of sensors reading a single strip like so

each sensor tripps a schmitt trigger as it passes over the edge of a line
each trigger fires off a one shot pulse
the pulses are combined with an n-input OR gate and the pulse train from the
OR gate
is sent to a counter
to simulate a quadrature signal they add a second array offset from the
first.
the sensors wouldnt have to be reading the same line they just have to tripp
in
sequence
