The famous L297 has a provision for wave drive. You select full when the
L297's translator is at an even numbered state. I tried it years ago
when I designed my first L297/L298 kit. It worked but as many have said
it wasn't very efficient but it was fast.

1) Wave driving is not used by any commercial I'm aware of. It only
exists as an academic curiosity in the sense it is a way of turning a
step motor.
