Ted:

I just noticed the VFD in your subject line, can I take that as a Variable
Frequency Drive? There are at least two different types out there that are
commonly used to drive three phase motors. One that is popular with the European
manufacturers is a single phase input with a three phase output. The one I
prefer to use has a three phase input and a three phase output. One thing to
point out is that changing the three phase input lines to the "inverter" or
variable frequency drive doesn not necessarily change the direction of the motor.
You will need to change the outgoing power leads between the variable drive
and the motor. Another thing to watch out for is to NEVER have any type of
device that can disconnect the motor from the variable frequency drive. If you
put a contactor or overload that can open that circuit while the drive is still
powered you can very likely burn out the drive.
