Hi Peter, Dave and list,

Yes, the machine has a belt drive head. It used a V-belt and cone pulleys.
I am installing toothed belt drive. One must be careful when choosing
pulleys for a high RPM machine. Usually the larger diameters are cast iron,
unsuitable for high speed operation, I will only use pulleys machined from
solid steel. The original motor was pretty useless, drawing 12A at 240V for
only 2 HP. The Baldor motor I will be using is a 5HP 3 phase 240V TEBC
unit. Yes, it does have the blower on it (the B in TEBC) powered by a
separate 120V motor. The bearings cost $100 each, sold only in pairs. I
also got some Belville washers from McMaster-Carr to set the spindle preload
and adjust for temperature variations. I will run an oiler on the ways as
well as use a timer operated mist unit to oil the spindle bearings. This
will only operate after a set number of minutes of spindle running time has
accumulated. This is necessary as high speed bearings are not available
with a seal due to friction heating considerations.

I will start to take pictures as I assemble the machine. Right now, I have
completely disassembled the unit and re-cut the ways. I should be able to
get fairly complete pictures of the re-assembly.

By the way, the Turcite cost $100/ sq. ft. The recommended 2 part adhesive
was $40 for two one pint cans. I am making new gibs for the machine, when
they are done I plan to apply the adhesive and Turcite and then re-assemble
a slide on the ways and use the gib screws to clamp the glue joint. I'm
hoping that minimal scraping will be needed after this process. We'll
see....
