Also consider driving the knee rather than the quill. I get plenty of Z
axis speed and as for accuracy, I can hold .0004" or .01mm via the knee
all day long (once the machine warms up). Not that I do if I don't have
to... This setup lets me lock the quill reall tight and gives me 16"+
of programmable Z travel. Just something to consider. I did have to
fit a ball screw for the knee, rather than the acme scew, and I also
had to counter balance the knee via gas springs but for me it's worth it.
