EMC and ini files

I downloaded the EMC image that allows you to boot from CD, but not
install on your computer and was impressed with the program. I have
only a lap for design/drafting G-code generation and machine
control. Some of those are Windows based, so would need a dual-boot
system. Because I am not ready to do that, I would like to continue
to boot from CD without an actual Linux install or a dual-boot
system.
It seems that getting EMC to run well with a particular machine
requires some trial and error adjustments. As I understand, that
means changes to the ini file. It also seems that there are two
possible solutions. One puts a directory on the computer that can
be used by EMC, but does not do an install of Linux on the
computer. The other is to change the ini file and burn a new CD.
The second means I need to burn a new CD with each ini file change,
which seems very cumbersome, and I am not certain I would even be
able to burn a CD to save the changes from Linux after I made the
changes.
The first option of having a directory that can be used by EMC seems
like it may work better. Has anyone else done this, and can you
provide some guidance?
