You are correct, for basic motion control linear accelertaion profiles are
OK. You can load your programs off punch tape too if you like :)

In modern, commercial controls, S curve accel profiles (ie d2v/dt2 kept
within finite limits) are one key feature that allows designers to extract
increased performance from their hardware. Some systems refer to it as 'jerk
limiting' .. either way, its one of the features that allows designers to get
more bang from their buck. If you ve never seen the difference in performance
that a modern control can make to cheap hardware ... its stunning.

Sure software cant make bad hardware good, but it can make OK hardware great
:)
