Gary, Jon, thanks for your suggestions re sensor placement.

Since the ebay auction for a nice Red Lion tacho counter / LED
display spiraled out of my reach, I have one other question: Does
someone know of nice circuit they could point me to?

I suppose one way to solve the problem would be to transform the
signal coming from the magnetic sensor to look like that coming from
the optical pickup in the Camtromics tacho. Such transformation
would have to be able to adjust the time base ... the Camtronics
wants two or four blips per rotation.
