Source of linear encoders

As these could be something people here may have had a look
at, I will ask.
Does anybody have access to data on HP ink jet plotters?

I see two interesting parts at good prices, but no 'fine detail'

C4704-60224 is quoted as a 36" encoder strip
C7770-60013 is quoted as a 42" encoder strip

These are probably not high enough resolution, but given the
dots per inch on the HP plotters it would be nice to know.

We are looking for a source of a 'ruler' for a linear sensor
that does not cost the earth :)
