I use Micro-Switch sealed limit switch units, although every controls
and sensors maker (A-B, Square D, Telemechanique, etc.) makes exact
drop-in replacements for these. The have a rotating shaft that takes
an arm with a roller on it. The home switch location is refined by
an index channel on the encoder. You could do the same on a stepper
driven machine with a wheel with a thin slot in it, and an optical
beam-break sensor that senses the slot as it passes by. With a little
work, it could easily mark the exact same step position as home
repeatably.
