What is the advantage to the bleeder capacitor, aside form avoiding shocks
while working on the circuit?

The only thing I have not seen that you may want is a bleeder resistor
across your filter capacitor to discharge it when power is turned off.
The ideal value will depend on the voltage of your supply and the
capacitance of the capacitor. A 500 ohm 10 watt resistor is a good
start. There have been many posts about how to pick the right size
bleeder but this will get you close.
