For my wiring to my stepper motors, I use a 4 wire 16 gage cable with a
shield. I only ground the shield at the control box end.

For my limit switches, I use inductive proximity sensors which has a shield.
If you use micro switches you can include a shield and only ground it at the
control box.

If you are using a breakout board with an optical isolator on the input, it
will help to eliminate the false triggers on limit switches.
