Obvioulsy, this is off topic, so please keep posts more topical.
In answer, there are many reasons. not the least of which is people
growing.
This list is dedicated to DESGNING AND BUILDING of machines, not how
to use them.
Once you find it, you join, read for awhile, then ask, then ask more,
then reply, all the while building your machine.
Once built, you (hopefully) post pictures and then hang around
because it is like home.
And you answer more questions. Eventually, many move on as their
needs change.
I might blame the weather. In the sping, my wife has some odd idea
that I should be cleaning the yard and not building a machine.
And, yes the DIY list attracted those who like to chat so some of the
graduates moved on.
That said, let's get this back on topic !
