Graham,
More info needed,
1 What kind of motor spec's have you got. (ie. wiring diag.,brand,model ,
voltage,phase resistance NEMA size , etc.)
2. Mike at Flashcut down in MenloPark ,CA might be able to help. Did you buy
new/used. Factory support?

The motors I have worked with have 4,5,or 6 wires ,not 8. Do your motors
have positional encoders on them by any chance?
How big/small of a mill are you puttinr this system on?
I'm no Shell answer man on this , I do know that the group needs more info
to go on to help you.
