Eight wire motors connected in parallel are about 3% higher power
than if they are wired as 4 wire motors.

SInce you are just starting out, I would considder just doing the 4
wire method.

See the white paper at www.geckodrive.com for how to wire them either
way.

Connect only one end the the shield to one ground. and carefully
make sure the opposite end does not make contact with anything.

Typically, the motor end is isolated so that end shield is securly
taped off. The driver end is grounded to the case.
