Your idea would seem good for ultraprecise but slow scanning but
could not be used on sharply varying surfaces.

For most digitizing second hand renishaw or a homemade probe will do
the trick. I got a Renishaw with syli in a wodden box for 100GBP.
It even came with extension bars and two heads. I also built my own
digitizer which worked really well also.
