Hi Michael,
If I didn't have such an investment in IronCAD, I might consider the
Rhino/VM bundle - but you're not comparing apples and apples. I have
played with the free demo of Rhino (V2.0) but didn't find it as easy to
use as IronCAD for my needs. It's not a solid modeller it's a NURBS
based surfacer (as I recall) with outstanding rendering capabilities.
Rhino's STL file format works great in VM, (I've used STL from IronCAD)
although I also have the Parasolid option turned on in VM so I am native
file compatible between IronCAD and VM. As you say, the packages are
well integrated and that is worth more then the actual $$ difference in
terms of productivity. You might also consider spending some money on a
1 week? Rhino training course. The money I invested in my IronCAD
training (4 yrs ago) was recouped at least 10-fold in terms of
productivity gains with the product.
As there is no price penalty for upgrading from VM basic to Full, why
not go that route - walk before you run! When I was considering VM,
back at V2.5 - there wasn't a basic version available so it wasn't an
option. In any event, you can try the full version for 30 days and then
decide which version is for you.
Now, it's back to work for me...
Cheers, Peter

One of the guys on my mc-chassis-design list has used the full version of VM since 1.0 (switching from other products he wasn't happy with), and he's paid for every upgrade since and has not regretted spending a dime of it.
