AH-HA group has made a DRO that employeed a rotary encoder
mounted on a shaft. There was a cable along the axis to be
measured. The cable had a couple of loops around the encoder
shaft. The provided software to display the position on the computer
monitor. It seems that the basic kit was less than $100 for the initial
axis. Other axis should be able tobe added for just the price of the
encoder and cable.

Hello. I'm builing a router that should have in the Y axis abou
2500mm (almost 100"). The price of linear slides, were I live
(Portugal) are about 2000 USD, with small slides (20mm) from NSK.
Ebay
is not a solution, since the transport is also very expensive.
I'm asking to the list alternatives to linear slides to the Y axis, if
not to heavy (under 30 Kg). If I can build it myself even better.
Anyone ?
Thanks
