I have a small toolmakers type vise I got from Enco for $50. It's a little
over 3" wide and 7" long. A lot larger than the Sherline. J&L has a 2" version
on sale for around $50 as a web special right now, and I'm going to get one of
those to use on my Sherline mill. Its a little larger than the Sherline Vise.

I'd second Bob's appraisal of the Sherline vise. I've made several sets
of soft jaws for mine, and have done some pretty interesting little
parts. You'd have to spend a lot of money to get a noticably better
vise. While misplaced holes and errant tool paths will eat into it, by
the same token, you might escape without breaking a tool, whereas a
hardened vise will win that battle.
