now-thanks to you and the others who answered on this-(I wish I had known

No. Depth is at the skinney end, and step is when it's standing on
its "head"...

4 functions, 4 different sets of jaws. One set at each cardinal
point, north-step, south-depth, east-inside and west-outside.
