Re: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Fryer VMC

Hi Greg:
I've never used a Fryer, but I do have a Haas Minimill, and I really
like it.
The Minimill has cut a lot of injection molds since I got it, and I have
only good things to say about it, if you can live with the small size.
I'd be leery of a machine that's twice as big and the same price...you've
got to ask yourself what the compromises are that enabled the maker to offer
the machine for such a low price.
The Minimill is no Cadillac, but it is a good accurate machine.
I recently bored a mold set together on the Minimill; "A" plate, slide
floating plate, and "B" side core plate.
Four leader pins and three interlocks.
Each plate was individually jig bored by reading and the pockets were milled
by reading.
The pockets were out in Y by 0.0002" when they were nominal in X, and the
mold slid together as if it had been line bored.
Granted the set was only 10" x 12", but I was more than satisfied with the
precision.
The thing about CNC in a commercial setting, is that the machine is almost
useless if it doesn't have the repeatability, accuracy, and reliability that
you need.
Cheapo ballscrews and linear packs, indifferent service and support,
marginal spindles etc etc will all come back to haunt you.
If you do go for the Fryer, check it out really well before you lay down
your cash.
I'd go armed with a hunk of P20 and a 2" facemill to check out the rigidity.
I'd take a plate with bushings in it at known locations and a tenths clock
too, just to see if the machine was reasonably accurate.
Just my two cents worth.
Cheers

Marcus
