I think the hole is likely made to line up with a hole in the bearing holder
that a grease zerk mounts to. These bearings are usually either greased this
way or the shafting is center drilled with grease hole drilled perpendicular
so as to grease from the center out when the bearing is located over it.
I think it will be very difficult to replace balls in a thompson type round
bearing without forcing them thru the plastic holders. Yes, this would
damage them and you'd have to be very careful reassembling them on the shaft
which would then hold them in place. When assembled in the factory I believe
they are likely loaded into a jig and then the whole assembly is pressed in
from the end.
I've purchased some bearings pretty reasonable from these guys
http://www.vxb.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=VXB+Bearings&Category_Code=LM
although I think Chinese or something, I think they'll work for a while. As
far as I know, only metric sizes though.
