With an open loop system, you have to size the drive power so that
you never exceed the limits of power required, or you will loose
steps.
With a closed loop system you have to size the drive power so that
you never exceed the limits of power required, or the drive will
fault out.
Either way, a well designed system will never exceed its power
limits, and therefore the table/tool will alway be where it was
commanded, within the limits of accuracy and repeatablity.
Marriss has recommended something along the lines of, below 60W power
on a axis steppers are the clear choice, between 60W and 100W either
steppers or servos, and above 100W servos are the clear choice.
There was a lower powered servo system offered here a while ago which
may have altered that equation a little.
