CNCing a bench top mill

I am interested in converting my HF mill/drill to CNC (just X and Y).
I run cnc machines at work, but when I read up on the stuff and get
to the drives and steps and.... well it just seems to go over my
head. Mechanical stuff, no problem. What would be the best starting
point.
