Graham,
I ran a Heidenhein control and it was very confusing and impractical compared to present controller options. Bridgeport builds the best small 3-axis mill in the world however, their bid for a share of the CNC market has been downright pitiful. Get a PC and 86 that junk.

I generally don't try to do any programming while the machine is cutting
parts, because I lose attention to the machining in progress. I am
generally
watching the progress, removing chips and making sure oil or coolant is
applied properly. I do have the capability with EMC, and have done it at
times, but things seem to go wrong when I'm not right on top of what is
being cut. I don't do one hour+ mold cavities, though, usually just cut for
a couple minutes and change the part.
Only holding one program is no big deal, as long as you can download
programs from a PC.
