I have used Belden 4 conductor with individually foil shielded pairs
and drains. You do have to buy the reel, but it works great! I offer
it on EBay as well by the foot. You don't have to get it from me,
but take a look, so you'll know what you're looking for. This will
work for open collector, or TTL (two channel encoders). If you are
running differential encoders with four channels, you'll need more
conductors.
