These posts and associated links are the best CNC resources for the do-it-yourselfer. You can convert anything to CNC. If its a good manual machine it will be a good CNC machine. If they are the opposite the opposite is true. Lead screws with backlash are irrelevant because they would be replaced with precision ballscrews. It takes ingenuity and perseverance often to convert a manual machine.
