Dave, I cant speak for Mach2 lathe but I use Mach2 mill and it is an excellent program. Art Fenerty works diligently resolving any issues that arise and continually progresses the software making it even more user friendly than it is already with updates very frequently. I plan to retrofit a big lathe-beast one of these days and I fully intend to use Mach2. A windows based program just makes more sense to me. I can minimize Mach2 and open up my CadCam software draw a part, generate a code and have it loaded in Mach2 and ready to run very quickly. A dos based program is probably capable of this as well but, I reviewed alot different softwares when I first did my retrofit and I just kept returning to Mach2. Another big reason is that Mach2 , Bob Campbells Mach2 breakout board and Geckodrives work perfectly together. The three seemed to have designed there components to compliment the others. They are practically plug and play.

I am converting a lathe, a 9x20 asian clone to be exact. Its purpose
will mainly be to make 4 parts, all are aluminum, but they are
threaded. I need to be able to cut a 1.375-20 unef class 2 thread. I
would like to cut these threads at least around 1k rpm, witch means i
need about 50 IPM of travel, its doable, i think. i have a nice
preloaded 6mm pitch ballscew i am going to use for the Z axis, i will
be cutting it and OD grinding it for bearing journals.

What software is best for controling this Mach2 or DeskCNC? do they
both do multiple pass threading? ID and OD. I am not planing on
cutting multiple lead threads at any time. I already have made
drawings and toolpaths in mastercam for these parts. Mach2 seems to
need very little editing from Mc9, so i was leaning that way, but the
new desk cnc board has raised questions also.

I am a machinist, i am a bit fuzzy on the controller side of it
though, i setup and program mills and lathes now so the programing and
the mechanicals of making this conversion happen are all nailed down,
i just need ot find the software to do what i want to do.

I dont see many lathe conversions out there.

Also if i use desk cnc do both ballscrews need to be the same pitch?

Thanks
