I seen that PC/DRO setup also with the wire/cable. And instead of using the wire just use a piece of .500 drill rod or TGP(turned, ground, polished) shaft for a roller to ride on instead of the cable/pulley arrangment which would surely pick up debris and skip and be easily damaged. Then find a small round accordian boot to shield each end of the shaft. Design a small box which totally encloses the roller and encoder with a tube on each side to attach the boot. Mount the box to the saddle for X and the knee for Y. That system works with like a 286 PC on up IIRC. They are so cheap that trying to build something to substitute would be futile. Use a roller on each side, one being an idler and springs compressing the two together. I dont remember if that program allowed calibration so, one might have to use a certain resolution and roller diameter. Worst case scenario on the boot just sew up some sleeves out of thin rubberized canvas, just anything to keep the water and debris out. The
linear strip encoders are expensive. I think "USdigital" has them with prices on their site.

Last night I was looking on the net and found some pages talking about using
a computer as a DRO. I also found one site with very limited info on an
encoder strip similar to those used in a digital caliper. Does anyone know
of such an encoder strip and can a person make one or buy one and then use a
circuit to give you the readout as opposed to the computer?
The pages I looked at used a string or timing belt and that didn't seem like
it would be to accurate or at least not for long.
Thanks
