Need software recommendation for motion control

I am using (abusing) CNC Pro for something it was never intended for,
a motion control project that uses several stepper and servo motors.

I will soon be needing to switch to software that can drive more than
four motors simultaneously. What recommendations are there for
economical software that is flexible and can drive up to seven
step/direction motors?
