Hi,

Don't know about a rule of thumb but I know that my 16mm (~5/8") screw for
my Z-axis whipped WAY to much for my liking without a support a the lower
end.. It's about 500mm (~19") long. You may get away your 6 inches depending
on the diameter of the screw and the speed you turn it. If it's not too much
problem, put that bearing in there. That's my opinion.
