Radius comp algorithm for turning?

To all,
Haven't posted to this group before - I mainly hang out in the 7x10
group since I use a CNC conversion of the minilathe for making
parts. Here's what I'm using...
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~dkowalcz/lathe/lathe.html
My question is, given a certain type of insert for turning (30deg
diamond let's say) and a nose radius of .060 or whatever and a
profile to be cut, how does one calculate the toolpath and resolve it
to G codes? I'm interested in more of a learning sense than a
practical one, I realize that CAM software can be had anywhere.
Seems like kind of a daunting problem, especially when curved
surfaces get into the act.
Anybody got an algorithm or two up their sleeve?
