What he is referring to are the list of modal parameters currently in
effect.
Some of these parameters indicate whether the machine is in metric or
imperial
mode, absolute or incremental moves mode, positioning or linear
interpolation
or arc interpolation, what plane is the current motion plane for arc
moves,
whether any work coordinate offsets are active, what tool is selected,
whether a cutter diameter compensation or tool length offset is in
effect,
whether exact stop mode is on, whether a canned cycle is in effect and
still
other things that can be set to be in effect until cancelled.

A number of these are in mutually exclusive groups, so only one modal
parameter from that group can appear at one time.
