I was looking at the Rockford conversion. Their spec is
.003 for the (rolled?) screws. Is this acceptable for
precision work like linear interpolation and thread milling?

Yes, Rockford ballscrew kit. Takes about two hours to swap out and they
are a very nice ballscrew assembly. About $650. Has everything one needs
for the upgrade.
