I've been thinking about this for a long time. I have a rough idea how to
make one of my stepper controller boards into a PWM generator for
2- and 3-phase PWM drives. Then, just run it through sufficient channels
of PWM drivers.

Micro Linear had a GREAT chip for this, but they discontinued it. The
ML4421
and later 4423.
