Never completely trust a PC to "look after things" wheather it has
buffers or interface cards. The final safety needs to be a shutdown of
power to the motors controlled outside the software. The likelyhood of
either system you mentioned going uncontrolled is slight but since
neither has direct interface (feedback) as to the physical position of
the machine trust a red button connected to the motor power for your
safety.
