Ian,
I have been running Mach2 / Mach3 since 2003 with great success. I am
currently using a 600MHz PIII with 256MB RAM in my shop. In my opinion the
best way to success with any control program running on a Windows box is to
keep it focused on the job at hand. My shop computer has NEVER been on a
network. It run Win2k SP4 and the shop computer is very reliable. I just
recently purchased 2000Lite from www.litepc.com and used it to remove all of
the non essential stuff from Win2K, now the machine starts up much quicker
and also shuts down much quicker. It only has 14 processes running
including Mach3. I suggest you try Mach2 or Mach3, the demo is free and
fully functional with a 10,000 line limit on the Gcode.
I have looked at DeskCNC but since you need to buy it to try it I have not
invested the money in DeskCNC. DeskCNC looks nice, I have seen it run at
Cabin Fever and Iron Fever but I have not had the opportunity to use it in
my shop. Yes, I know you can download the DeskCNC software to check it out,
but unless I can actually run my machines with it I will not invest money to
try it.

Just looking for views on Deskcnc vs Mach2. The (very much simplified)
issue seems to be trusting the PC to look after things properly on its
own (Mach2) versus using a buffer between the PC and the machine tool
(Deskcnc).
Has Mach2 got this sorted out properly or is it safer to go with the
deskcnc approach?
