You probably have SATA - does booting hang on a SCSI driver? If so,
edit the boot command to add noscsi to the end of the line. You may
need to delete a series of statements like hda=scsi hdb=scsi and so on
- I don't remember if that is necessary. Alternately, go into the
BIOS and disable SATA - might as well save the resources IF you aren't
using it.

If rc37 works, it is because the kernel is too old to have any idea
what SATA is and ignores it; rc46 recognises it but hangs.

If your hard drive is on SATA, (and if you want to install to disk),
then you are out of luck with the current selection of "Live" BDIs. I
think that SATA support is included in the 4.xx BDIs (Right, Paul?) -
I notified him of the problem but don't think I ever verified that the
fix worked - sorry!
