You are probaly getting noise from you VFD injected in your step/dir lines.
If the cable from the VFD to motor isn't shielded already you should
probably start with that. Connect the shileld to groung at the VFD end and
leave it unnconnected at the motor end.
If that doesn't help continue with the step/dir lines. Shield them and
separate them as much as possible from all 'high power' wires. That should
take care of things I think.
