The Quadralift part has about 8" of travel(or ore; I don't remember exactly, but it's at least 8"), and the quill is about 3.5" of travel.
The 5th column on the Bridgemill has a lock that must be loosened before you adjust the "quadralift" part, and then tightened after you are done, the idea is that the quadralift is analogous to the knee, and is usually used for "getting the head in the area it needs to be", while the quill is used for the actual Z moves while running a part program.
Since the head doesn't tilt( at least, not by design) the height is the only ything that is adjustable with the "lift" part, and it is pretty repeatable on my older unit; I can't say what, if anything, the 5th column may do to this, though I have seen some reports that it is very good, and none that there is a problem. Take this for what it's worth.
