Have a look at your motor, its probably a highish voltage DC device. The
mini lathe drives are usually provide a few hundred volts PWM.
An optio isolator from the parallel port driving the output stage of the
existing circuit with PWM from Mach3 would work and cost next to nothing.
Make absolutely sure you know what you're doing first though. That drive can
deliver several hundred watts, you wanna be sure that power doesn't end up
going into your PC or worse still, you..

If you want to control the motor speed, then you have a few very
simple options. one is to use a stepper powered pot. Althugh it is
not dynamic, it offers the interface.
another way is to add a PWM output to genearate a voltage signal like
the POT would have.
Yet another way is to use the modbus output to a PIC and then have the
PIC or AVR do the real-time speed control.
