While a differential input amplifier can be referenced to ground, it is intended to be used with double-ended input signals that are not referenced to ground. It is especially useful for receiving and amplifying a
low-level signal in an electrically noisy environment - i.e., almost any machine shop ... check the link for a brief explanation:
