Based on years of experience in machinery maintenance I have to
respectfully disagree with one of Marv's points. Attemp and
agreessively try to organize like materials. Especially the very
common things such as fuses, switches and the like. That is put each
series of parts into a common location, such as your ABC fuses in one
drawer and the 5mm fuses in another. Further keep them organzed and
in order. This is even more important when an item you may need is
made up of several parts such as switches.

The primary reason for this approach, which by the way is not likely to
jive with common inventory management practices is to save on leg
work. There is nothing worst than having to go clear across a stock
room to find the lever arm for the switch you just grabed for a
machine. This also makes it much easier to retrive hardware without
having to reference an inventory system. Then you have to consider
the benefit it provides to innovation and development.

Of course you do have to know when to stop. For some things it is not
worth the effort, based on frequency of access. Plus you have to
consider space utilization.

Thanks
Dave
