Gecko White Paper Question

I have a question about the following phrase in the Gecko Drive white paper, "Microstepping occurs on the falling edge ("1" to "0" transition) of the "Step" input, and is delayed from 4 to 60 uS depending on the motor's speed."

Can anybody expain the purpose of this delay?
