I've only used the first version of the static phase converter. With regard
to the transformer version, one side of the transformer is not being used,
only a side that allows serial connection of a pair of 120 volt (nominal)
windings for a 240 volt (nominal) connection. (Neutral to on leg of 240 is
normally 120 volts--this is a trick to split 240 in half if you don't have
neutral available.) At first blush, you need enough amps to hand the coil
current of the potential relay. However, it looks like there could be some
interesting transients depending on what is happening with the generated
third leg phase. I would think you would want to go with a transformer
capable of handling the current rating of your motor (not too big a deal for
a 3/4 hp motor) to be on the safe side. Better yet, make sure you have
neutral available from your single phase source and forget all about the
transformer.

3/4 hp 3 phase motor I got with a lathe and am planning on using the
design at:
