I have a couple of commerial build phase converters on grain bin dryer fans.
Like was mentioned before, it is not alot of fun standing pushing a start
button and having capacitors blowing up about two foot away from your head.
They are not fool proof. I had built a phase converter many years ago for my
shop. I used a used 20 horse 3 phase motor that I brought up to speed with a
1 horse 1 phase motor. After the big motor is up to speed,throw the juice to
it and your in business. The engineer at the local power co-op told me it
couldn't work. I finally got him out one day to watch,he just threw is hands
up and walked away.

I used a commercial static phase converter for a while after I got my
Bridgeport. I had problems starting the bridgeport. I would have to turn
it on and off several times before it would start. Now if I turned on my
surface grinder and left it running on the phase converter I could then
start my Bridgeport. To reverse it had to be from a stopped position.
Now I have a commercial rotary phase converter. Starts and reverses with
no problem. Big difference!
